Happy Thanksgiving

Here are some pictures I added after our trip to Conway. They were taken on Thanksgiving at my Dad's. We had so much fun and the food was awesome...we missed Heather's family, LaNelle, Steven, and Andrew...but we were all so glad to be with Peter...

I love the Holidays!!!! And Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days. Last night's family night lesson was about some of the most important blessings we have to be thankful for. It goes without saying (although we should say it anyway) that I am thankful for my savior and for the Gospel and my wonderful family. I am truly thankful for them. I feel so blessed to have such good parents who love me and rejoice with me and mourn with me...so thankful for the lessons they taught me growing up...for independence, love of learning, integrity, compassion, and so many more. They allowed me to be myself and also expected great things...and gave me the tools to be whoever I wanted to be. They exposed us to culture, to work, to rich and poor...they helped us realize the importance of family and service and truth...and they taught us to search, ponder, and pray and stand up for what we believe in! How blessed indeed to have been given that great heritage! And I am thankful for my children and the overwhelming love I feel for them. They are each so different, with different strengths and challenges but they are all united in their love for one another and that alone makes me feel triumphant! I am so very Thankful that we will all be together this year on Christmas eve and Christmas Day and so excited that my Mom and Gramps, Daddy and DeeDee, Kim, Jean, and Floyd will also be in Raleigh. What a HUGE BLESSING!!! I'm thankful for my home and my awesome Pecan trees...for the South and being born here...for the opportunity to be a nurse in a unit I love...for laughter and tears..for the joy of living. I hope you all have a wonderfully happy Thanksgiving and take time this season to reflect on life's true joys and forgive easily and desire to love more. It is all good...

CCRN (Hallelujah!!)

I did it!!!! It's unbelievable to me still...I passed the CCRN...it means I am now nationally recognized (board certified!!) as a critical care nurse. It's a very difficult exam and you have to have almost 2000 hours of bedside critical care experience to even take it. But once you have it, you can go to any hospital anywhere in the country and be recognized as a top critical care nurse! My manager offered to pay for a review course if anyone wanted to take the test and so far only three people in the PICU have passed (and they have many years of experience) and it is like a miracle that I passed. My friends and family believed in me but I HONESTLY thought I was in over my head. I have never been so nervous and scared. (I never get test anxiety...I might say I am afraid of failing but this is the first time I ever really thought I had no chance of passing and I was terrified!!) I was actually sick the night before. My girlfriend Lauralan went to Walmart with me at 10 pm so I could take my mind off of the test and Pete gave me a blessing. It was such an awesome incredible feeling to hold that certificate...and then my girlfriends and I were off to Savannah to see Pamelia and CELEBRATE!!! The best part was when I came to work Friday night, the whole staff including doctors stopped what they were doing and applauded me and presented me with these gorgeous flowers that my DAD and DeeDee had sent to me!!! (You never ever quit being daddy's little girl even when you are 47!) WOW WOW WOW!!!!! It's hard after all of that not to have the BIGHEAD but in truth...that ridiculously hard test just emphasized to me how much I still have to learn...but it's still really really cool to know I can sign my name

Witches and Goblins and Tigers OH MY!!!!

The green makeup was almost gone here as she had been playing football (in the grass behind the parking lot) with Connor while we strung lights!
The twins with Ashlyn and Ainsley Waters...Connor always says he's going to marry Ashlyn Waters in the Coulmbia SC Temple!
Helpful Patti and the wicked witch!
Patti decorated our van with ghosts, stickers and cautioon tape.
Hard to see but Pete strung lights for the parking lot...it made for a festive atmosphere! (It also made me want to decorate for Christmas!!!!)

Tonight was a fun Halloween! Sarah Beth was a wicked witch with a green face and Connor was James Davis (a Clemson Football player!). We helped with the Trunk or Treat party at our ward building and it was a blast! Sister Johnson and I only had two weeks to get it together because of the ward realignments...she is the Activities Chairperson and I am her helper. She singlehandedly did the hot dog dinner (for 3 wards!!!) and costume parade while Pete and I decorated the parking lot, parked the cars and managed the trunk or treating. The twins had so much fun with all of their friends and even Patti got into the spirit of things and was helping everywhere! What fun!! (Thank goodness Jackie made me go back with her to WW and I recommitted because we have a house full of CANDY!!!) Enjoy the pics of our fun night! Hope you all had fun and don't get a tummyache from too much sugar...

Peter Finally Came Home to Visit!!!

Peter and Connor have the same blue eyes
Tailgating at a Tiger Game...
Peter and his friend Jill from home...they have been friends since they were kids
Peter on top of the world (I hope it wasn't as dangerous as it looks!)
This is dangerous...Peter is on the left about to jump...it's about 35 feet (bigger than a 3 story building)
Peter at a YSA conference
Peter on his intramural flag football team. He has CJ Spiller's number (Connor's favorite Tiger player)

Peter in his apartment...below is his wall..he bought white shower surround at Lowe's and put it up so he can draw/erase/draw again (where was this when he was "decorating" our walls in Charlotte???) He's a good artist

Peter is having so much fun at Clemson, he hasn't been home since August!! We are glad he likes it but we have really missed him. He came home with some of his friends to go to a dance and made it home in the early hours this morning and he leaves this afternoon! But, hey...we were just glad to see him! Connor met me at the door when I came in from work to say, "Can you believe it? Peter is here...he's sleeping right there on our couch...I can't believe he's home!" Peter will always have at least one true blue fan in Connor!! We love our Tiger!!!!

Happy Birthday to Me!!

This is a terrible copy but it was a polaroid! Pete wore his red shirt because he knew that is my favorite!! Is he sweet or what?? We were the only ones at our table and the cook was really good. We had filet and shrimp!!

This is after my haircut but before I styled it (you know I have to tuck it behind my ears) it's a little short but it grows so fast I wanted to start out short!...see my "I'm the birthday girl" ribbon I wore all day!!! The twins loved it.

Pete took the day off to be with me on my birthday! Wow!! It was so nice. We went to Sumo and then I got to get my hair colored and cut while he picked up the twins. He also made me a great chocolate cake and he and the kids gave me roses and some of my VERY FAVORITE perfume...Oscar de la Renta! My brother Floyd used to buy that for me all the time back in the day but I never get it now so it was a big surprise! So it was a huge day for me...Japanese food with my sweetheart, pampering at the salon, and perfume...WOW!! (Kind of takes the sting out of being 47!!!) And all of my children called me and that's always fun! It was a great day!

My Very Favorite Birthday Gift

It will be my birthday in a few minutes. Twenty one years ago today Pete and I took LaNelle and Peter (18 months and five months) to visit my Mom and Gramps in Chicago, Illinois. Little did we know that we had a daughter there, waiting for us. My birthday is always doubly special to me because it was on my birthday in 1986 that we met Heather. She was just barely 13 and she had braces and short spiky hair. She was such a tiny little thing and she grabbed my heart immediately. I remember being restless and unable to sleep that night. For some reason unknown to me then, I cried that night after everyone was asleep. My heart was so tender towards this little motherless girl. She had helped LaNelle wrap a present for me and she cried when Jim made her leave that night. I think her tears just broke my heart. We left a few days later and all the way to New York (to visit Pete's mom) I thought about Heather and wondered why she meant so much to me. I think Pete thought I'd gone a lttle crazy (not a far trip for me, actually!). She came to visit us in Charlotte that summer. We took her to Tybee Island and she called my Dad " Father Tom" but with her accent, he thought she was saying "Father Time". She liked to drink milk but she called it "mulk" and we teased her. When she asked if she could walk to the beach by herself while we parked the van, Pete wondered why. I told him teenagers were often embarrassed by being seen with families. He looked surprised and said, "She sprayed her hair green and she has on combat boots and she's embarrassed to be seen with me?" I looked at him with his faded shorty short swim trunks, athletic socks to the knee and boat shoes and replied, "Yeah, well I'm embarrassed by both of you!" She was a swimmer and taught2 year old LaNelle to swim that summer. Pete's adoration of Heather was not as immediate as mine. He was kind to her and welcomed her to our home mainly because he knew it made me so happy. (It took Pete two years to accept the Gospel after he started reading the Book of Mormon. He ponders and holds himself back but once he's converted, they come no more dedicated than he. It was like that with Heather. )When she left to return to Chicago, it was as if my heart had been ripped out. I knew then that somehow, someday, Heather would be part of our family. And so she is!! By the time she came for good, Pete's heart was as captivated as mine. There is nothing he would not do for her or any of our children. I remember when her appendix ruptured and he about went insane trying to get to the hospital. He had a HUGE project going "live" at work and it was impossible for him to leave but he did. He just left. Immediately. There are many many people who do not understand how she became our daughter or how we could love so completely a child we did not have until she was a teenager. For years I was defensive and tried to make people understand. I would get so angry when well meaning people (even family at times) would say things like "your foster daughter" or "you are more like an aunt and uncle, right?" It was Pete who told me years ago, "Look. Ignore them. She is our oldest daughter. In my heart and yours, she is and always will be our daughter. Heavenly Father gave her to us just as he did the other 4 (this was pre-twins) and it isn't necessary that anyone other than Heather and our other children understand that. We are a family now and for eternity and that is all that is important!" As always, he was right.
So many memories! Heather teaching the kids to swim and Andrew embarrassing her, Heather driving Pete's old Chevette and calling it her "vette", Heather about killing some neighbor kids because she thought they were hurting Peter, Heather bringing me Peter when he was limp and blue and crying with me as we worked to save him, Heather taking Patti to school with her, Heather taking my Dillard's card and five year old LaNelle shopping and buying her a coordinated outfit for her first day of kindergarten, and then 8 years later taking her own credit cards and teenage LaNelle shopping after fussing at me first for not realizing LaNelle had no clothes, Heather at Christmas pretending she liked the hideous clothes I picked out for her, Heather freaking out at Hardees in Bishopville after Andrew..., and on and on and on...

She is beautiful, smart, kind and generous. She's also tough. Her brothers and sisters know that if they have a battle to fight, Heather will be there fighting with them (and for them if they let her even is she doesn't agree with their "side"). And when she hurts, they are devastated. I turn to her for support at every crisis and she is rock solid. She is the perfect big sister and daughter and I cannot imagine life without our precious girl!!! Especially since that would mean life without Kalib...the most amazing little boy to ever be born!

Heather was the most precious perfect birthday gift I ever received or ever could receive and I thank my Heavenly Father for her often but especially every year on October 24th!

The original LaNelle

Grandma Nell and my ALL-TIME FAVORITE great uncle Corbin (Andrew was named for him!!) They were the youngest of six kids and very close...Uncle Corbinwas as full of life as his sister Nell!
Grandma Nell and one of her many horses...she was very involved with the Quarter Horse Association and taught us all to ride...well, except Kim who was afraid!
Grandma Nell as a young woman...I wish I'd known her then!!! But I guess it's best I knew her when I did!

I miss her so very much! I haven't seen her since the summer of 1977..over 30 years...that just seems impossible because she is so firmly etched in my memory. She was the most incredible person I ever knew and I was so honored to bear her name. Patti wrote a beautiful story about Grandma Nell (who actually preferred to be called just "Nell" because only old women were grandmas!!) and it has made me miss her soooo much! She taught me to play Rook...and how to cheat, too! but she was always OBVIOUS about "talking across the board" so it wasn't really cheating! She was the most generous person on earth and when she gave you something...she GAVE it to you...she never ever gave it with stipulations or tried to control what you did with her gift...it was yours and you could do whatever however whenever...she truly was one of those rare people who gave for the sheer joy of giving. She never stayed "down"...whatever was wrong could be fixed or if not, then ignored (Scarlet O'Hara had nothing on my Grandma Nell!!! She was the queen of "worrying about that tomorrow"!) I know she had a wild few years when she was young but by the time I knew her she was the pillar of society...supporter of young struggling preachers, business owner, committee chairperson, etc...but even when she was a "grown-up", I saw glimpses of the free spirit she truly was...born WAY ahead of her time! She was a pilot (one of the very first in Mississippi!) and I can imagine she loved the freedom of the skies!!!

Everyone..young/old/rich/poor/man/woman/child...we all wanted to be around her. She was funny and fun! and she loved you with her whole heart...I was so lucky to have known Florence LaNelle Kees. and I'm thankful for eternal families... I can't wait to see her with my children...
