We Love Our Very Own Missionaries!!!!

OK terrible picture of me but fabulous of "my elders"...they haven't really changed at all..maybe a little more mature but just the same as they were in 1978...except Elder Healy had bright red hair and now it's white...I love them and they have the most AWESOME wives..we were all blessed with very choice mates!!!!
My favorite missionaries and our family's personal heros!!!

Brother and Sister Brooksby (Preston and Barbra), me and Pete (of course!), and then my very own elders, Elder Todd Healy and Elder Hank Telford...and yes, I cannot call them anything but ELDER Healy and ELDER Telford because that is who they are to me!

Brother Brooksby, Pete, and I laughing at a memory!
Sister Brooksby and grandbaby join in!
LaNelle, Wilson, and Elder Telford's daughter chatting while Bonnie Telford listens to me yak!
Barbara and her daughters and grandchildren..Bree loves Steven and he adores her! See McCall next to Steven...she was 7 or 8 the year LaNelle stayed with her, went to EFY and met Steven!W  What a fabulous fun and touching night we all had!!  I miss them already...

Fun Fun Fun

Waiting for the Commencement...and we were also waiting for President Uchtdorf!!!! He is now LaNelle's FAVORITE because he and President Clark were at the top of the stairs as the graduates marched up from under the auditorium and LaNelle was on his side and when it was her turn to pass him, he smiled at her and said "Beautiful! Congratulations!" She said, "Well, it's against the rules for a member of the 1st presidency to lie and he told me I was beautiful!" That's my LaLa!! His talk was so inspiring and so was president's Clark's talk! Gotta love Church schools!

LaNelle wanted to LOOK like a theater major (even though she was really a theater education major!) so her friend Natalie (an incredibly talented hair stylist and PRECIOUS girl) transformed her...even LaNelle said, "I look in the mirror and don't even recognize myself!" Steven loves the look and it will work in Vegas! She's young enough and hip enough to pull it off...one day she'll be an old boring settled Mama but for now she's making lemons from lemonade and enjoying the moment! Go LaNelle!!!

It started snowing during the graduation and when we woke up Saturday morning, the world was white...we knew Heather missed Kalib and Kyle but we almost wished her flight would be cancelled so she'd have to come with us to SLC...but it didn't happen so we said goodby..it was sad because I cannot express how awesome it was to spend so much time with my 3 grown daughters!!!! They are all gorgeous, fun, and extraordinary young women!
We shopped a little at The Gateway (we were FREEZING in the snow and it's an outside mall...I kept slipping and almost fell several times..note to self, don"t wear crocs in a blizzard!") and had an awesome meal at California Pizza Kitchen. Then we went to..where else?...Wal-Mart and back to our spacious 2 bedroom suite to cook and talk and laugh... and on Sunday morning, we went to Temple Square...

LaNelle had bare legs and she walked fast because it was freezing!!! Pete and I kept stopping because everything was so gorgeous! including our daughters...we are so glad Patti is coming home with us! She, of course, will be counting the days until she returns to the BURRRRRRGGGG!

We attended church in the Joseph Smith Memorial building...how's that for awesome???? We loved it and it was such a spirit filled occasion!
Now here is a beautiful sight...my sweetheart and me on the "Bride and Groom" spot in front of the Salt Lake Temple!!! We enjoyed spending time with each other soooooo much!!!!

Pete loved being with his girls! and they sure loved seeing their Daddy! We were really missing Heather, Sarah Beth, Peter, Andrew, Connor, Kyle, and Kalib!!!

Next year, we just might have a white Christmas in Park City with EVERYONE if we can get them all to agree! Three of them will already be out there...

This is for my sister. Jean served a mission in Sweden and all along Temple Square they have luminaries and the bags say something in foreign languages (I couldn't find an english one so I don't really know but I'd guess maybe "Merry Christmas"?) This is the swedish one...I think it was a K on the left and I can't remember the rest of the letters...anyway, Jean has kept Sarah Beth and made her visit so much fun she never even calls me (usually it's many times a day!) THANK YOU JEAN!!!!!!

Sunday night was my FAVORITE because I got to see "my elders" and the Brooksbys and everyone finally met each other...such a joyous occasion...Pete and I both cried just overwhelmed with emotion for the incredible GIFTS bestowed upon us by a loving Heavenly Father with the help of those precious souls!!! We will always love and honor them! Pictures will follow..right now we are stranded in the SLC airport waiting for clearance to fly to Houston! I am ready to be back in SC but I have LOVED this slice of time in the West!

MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

SLC reflections...

Pictures when I get home...

Today (well, Sunday morning)we went to Temple Square and attended sacrament Meeting in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. It was their Christmas program and it was gorgeous!!!! I loved the music (harp/violin/incredible soloists) and the talk and the fact that everyone was adult and all the brothers passing the sacrament were elderly...it was sweet.

"My elders" (Elder Healy and Elder Telford..otherwise known as Todd and Hank) came over tonight with their familes and the Brooksbys and their families..and sweet Wilson Pace. We shared a meal in our suite (all 27 of us..it's a big suite!!) and laughed and talked and cried and remembered and I am eternally grateful for those precious young elders in Mississippi back in that steaming hot humid summer of 1978 that taught me the gospel...and also for my awesome wonderful friends that are now family...the Brooksbys for teaching Pete. I love them all so much and love this Gospel and my family. I have been given much!!!

Title changed because I am an obedient daughter!

OK my Mama will be glad I took off the title (it was just a joke Mama but as you see I am obedient!!) We are having a ton of fun..it is sooo nice to be here with Pete and Heather. We have loved getting to know Patti's roommates, and spending time with LaNelle's friends...I miss the twins but they are having too much fun to miss me!

What are we doing??? eating, laughing, playing games, eating some more, shopping, telling stories, and shopping some more...

and I asked LaNelle and Patti if they'd seen Jillian Bryant Stratton and they said not yet but they'd talked a lot...so OF COURSE, tonight, at Wingers, we ran in to Jill and Craig! Remember that last summer, we ran into the Bryants at Yellowstone??? We LAUGHED at the coincidence. She looked GREAT and we enjoyed talking with Craig!

lots more to come, I'll post pictures when I get home!

1. Wrapping Paper or gift bags?
I love wrapping paper and like my Mama, I don't care if it is ten things from the dollar tree, I JUST LOVE to have them wrapped pretty...and I crack up at Kim and LaNelle and my friend Jackie for having to have coordinated paper...I'm lucky to get them wrapped!

2. Real tree or Artificial? Real are the best, but a friend gave me a gorgeous artificial tree last year and so we have it now but usually, we cut them down and if I have one HUGE Christmas regret it is that I didn't let Peter have the cedar tree he wanted one year...that has bugged me for years!
3. When do you put up the tree? As soon after Thanksgiving as possible but at least by FHE after Thanksgiving!

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? I love all of them...but maybe Miracle on 34th Street.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? The day after Thanksgiving.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? I have a beautiful sparkly star!
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas Eve, b/c Christmas morning Santa comes and we look in our stocking then. (again, Kim's answer but then we are sisters and have so many of the same traditions!
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? NAT (non accidental trauma...in other words, CHILD ABUSE and it soars at Christmas time!
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? I love red and green, garland and lights and bows
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Mama's cornbread dressing and gravy...mac and cheese and cranberry salad...oh and sweet potato casserole.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? what I cannot have this year and that's all 7 of my kids, my 2 sons in law and Kalib and me and Pete all together on Christmas morning...but we had that last year and will again one day!
26. Who is most likely to respond to this? Jean...maybe Jackie if I get really lucky!!!
27. Who is least likely to respond to this? Andrew, aka Dr Drew or Katie
OK, everyone that LOVES Christmas.....your turn!

A tribute to Pete's cousin...

Ron Grace 1953-2008

Pete's aunt, uncle and cousins moved from NY to California when he was a toddler. There were no blogs back then and so it was hard to stay very close...they talked on holidays and visited when they were on the same side of the continent...I met Pete's aunt only once when Patti was a toddler. Pete knows his cousins by name and has seen them a handful of times...so sad! But, he was still shocked and saddened to learn that his cousin Ron (only a month younger than Pete) was one of the victims in the train wreck in LA (you know the one where the engineer was texting???). As I read Ron's obituary, I thought more than once how similar in character he sounds to Pete...what a shame that families do not stay close...I love blogs and yes, I'll admit it, even facebook because it is a way to know about the lives of our extended family far away...you can skip the obit if you want but please say a prayer for Ron's wife and two sons...one of whom is named Andrew...

Ron Grace, 55, Simi Valley
The head counselor at Theodore Roosevelt Middle School in Glendale is remembered by colleagues, students and family as ‘an incredibly happy person’ who lifted everyone’s spirits.
September 16, 2008
Ron Grace was the heart and soul of Theodore Roosevelt Middle School in Glendale, a man who changed students’ lives and constantly uplifted colleagues. But had he been at school on Monday, Principal Maria Gandera said, he would have been talking about two things: How the San Diego Chargers got fleeced on Sunday, and how ridiculous it was to see reporters and a television camera in front of his school.
“He’d just find this funny, because he was never out there seeking any attention,” Gandera said.
Roosevelt was in the media eye Monday because Grace, the school’s head counselor, was killed in the crash of Metrolink train 111 on Friday as he was riding home to Simi Valley. He was 55.
The loss devastated not only his family, including his wife and two sons, but the school where he spent 23 years.
“Ron Grace: I think his name said it all,” Gandera said. “He was a quiet, dignified man – with a devilish sense of humor.” Grace had an ever-present smile, colleagues remembered, and showed extraordinary devotion to students, often giving up his lunch break to referee football or basketball games.
“He was part of our family,” said Emma Villalobos, whose three daughters were counseled by Grace. When Villalobos went through a divorce, she said, Grace helped her two older daughters through the tumult. Because of him, she said, one is now at UCLA, the other at Cal State Northridge. The third is in eighth grade at Roosevelt.
“My kids,” she said, “had an angel named Mr. Grace.”
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Ronald Gerard Grace moved to Glendale at the age of 1. He attended Bellarmine-Jefferson High School in Burbank, where he was a standout on the football field and in the classroom. At San Diego State University, he developed his fanatical devotion to the Chargers. He began working at Roosevelt in 1985 as a physical education teacher and became a counselor four years later.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; sons, Andrew, 23, and Brian, 19; and five siblings, Jack Grace, Arleen Grace, Ginger Lyman, Michelle Stochel and Lorraine Grace. A memorial service will be held at San Fernando Mission on Sept. 27 at 11 a.m.
Recalling her brother, Lorraine Grace said: “He was an incredibly happy person. His favorite saying was, ‘The glass is half full.’ He loved adventure, loved doing new things. I admire him more than anyone else in the entire world. The universe surely shifted on Friday.”

Would you hire this kid????

So one of the really great things about being a BYU-I student is their extensive network for internships...Andrew recently received a chance to apply for an internship with Madison Square Garden and was told to write a cover letter, attach his resume and fax it to the internship coordinator at MSG and THEN email copies to one of the Church's service missionaries in NYC that has "strong" connections with MSG and will work from the inside to get him an interview...cool or WHAT????? Gotta love the Church schools!!!!!! Here's a copy of the body of Andrew's cover letter...would you hire this kid???? He is already planning to live with his Aunt Patti and commute to NYC everyday (hasn't asked her yet...nor has he received an interview but Andrew is always OPTIMISTIC...we'll keep you posted!

Dear Coordinator,

My extensive volunteer experience in sports management and my status as a sophomore at Brigham Young University-Idaho studying business management, make me an ideal candidate for a fall internship with Madison Square Garden.

My training in leadership and conflict resolution, combined with my courses in business, have convinced me that sports and entertainment management is a career option I would like to explore.

More importantly, an internship with Madison Square Garden would be mutually beneficial. Madison Square Garden is the world's most famous arena, and I know that the combination of my experience, education, and motivation to excel will make me an asset to your organization.

I would appreciate the opportunity to talk to you and answer any questions about my background, training and skills. Please feel free to contact me anytime at 803) 315-6596 or by email at she07012@byui.edu.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Andrew C Sheridan
